Nicaragua: A Sleeping Giant

Nicaragua is bordered by Honduras on the north, Costa Rica on the south, the Caribbean and Pacific oceans on the east and west respectively. The country is divided into 3 distinct geographical regions; Pacific lowlands, North central mountains, and the Caribbean lowlands. Known for her chain of volcanoes and lakes, this sleeping giant is not only the largest country with the largest lake (Lake Nicaragua) of all Central America, but also contains the only body of freshwater on earth to be inhabited by sharks! Lake Nicaragua itself has more than 400 islands.

Sadly enough, Nicaragua has only set aside 17% of her land for conservation. However, she has the highest % of undisturbed virgin forests in Central America with the lowest population density. This makes her one of the most pristine bio-diverse regions in the Americas. The highest peak is Pico Mogoton at 2438M and the tallest volcano comes in at 1745M in San Cristobal (Volcan San Cristobal).
